Exports to US flat in December despite tariff advantage

KARACHI: Pakistan’s exports to the United States remained largely flat in December of the current fiscal year compared with the same month last year, despite benefiting from lower tariff rates.

Exports also declined in key markets including Europe, the United Kingdom and China during the month under review.According to country-wise data released by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) on Tuesday, Pakistan exported goods worth $447 million to the US in December, marginally lower than $449 million in the same month of the previous fiscal year. Exports to China fell by four percent to $217 million, compared with $226 million a year earlier.

Exports to the UK declined 23 per cent to $142 million from $184 million in December last year, while shipments to Germany fell 8.0 per cent to $135 million from $147 million. Exports to the Netherlands dropped 20 per cent, while exports to Spain fell by 2.0 per cent during the month. Shipments to Belgium recorded a decline of 11 per cent, and exports to France were down 9.0 per cent.

In contrast, exports to the United Arab Emirates rose sharply by 33 per cent to $180 million in December, compared with $136 million in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year. Exports to Saudi Arabia declined by 14 per cent, while shipments to Bangladesh fell by 52 per cent during the month.

During the first six months of the current fiscal year, exports to the US posted growth of three percent, while shipments to the UAE rose by 18 per cent. Over the July-December period, exports to China fell by 8.0 per cent, while exports to both the UK and Germany declined by 4.0 per cent each.

Exports to all regions fell in December. Shipments to Europe declined 12 per cent to $826 million from $939 million in the same month last year. Exports to Asia recorded a sharp decline of 29 per cent to $794 million, compared with $1.1 billion a year earlier. Exports to the Americas fell 2.0 per cent to $520 million in December FY2026, compared with $533 million in December FY2025. Exports to Africa dropped 32 per cent to $154 million from $226 million, while shipments to Oceania declined 6.0 per cent to $29 million, compared with $30 million in December last year.
