New Karachi police chief says curbing street crime, extortion, narcotics to be among his priorities

The newly appointed Karachi police chief, Additional Inspector General of Police Azad Khan, has stated that curbing the street crime, extortion and narcotics in Karachi will be his priorities and action shall be started in the coming days against the mafia involved in these crimes.

It may be noted here that the Sindh government had in the late hours of Thursday issued a notification for the appointment of Khan as the new Karachi police chief. Before his new post, Khan was serving as the Sindh Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) additional IGP.

Talking to The News, he said that it was his duty to provide a peaceful atmosphere for the people of Karachi and his priorities included curbing the menace of street crime by further expanding the intelligence network and surveillance. He said he would also hold a meeting on law and order in the coming days to develop a strategy against the criminal elements.

To a query, Additional IG Khan said that before being the Karachi police chief, he had served as the Sindh CTD chief where he had carried out vast investigations against the criminal and narcotics mafias, and led operations against them in coordination with local police.

Now being the Karachi police chief, he said he would continue operations against the narcotics mafia and had directed the subordinates, especially the SHOs, to kept an eye on educational institutes and arrest the drug peddlers involved in spreading narcotics there.

He said that he would also continue the process of friendly policing and take measures to remove negative perception of police. He added that he would also enhance and continue the technology-based policing, including the faceless policing.

Khan’s appointment is being welcomed in the police department as well as political, social, business and public circles, where he is known as an experienced police officer. He has performed various important and sensitive responsibilities during his police service. He served in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and before that he served in the Sindh police for several years in various capacities, including the Shah Faisal SP and Karachi South DIG. He also served in the Federal Investigation Agency before joining the IB where he gained valuable experience in dealing with intelligence, security and sensitive matters.
