A double-decker bus service has once again been introduced for the people of Karachi after a gap of 65 years. Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon and Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Wednesday jointly inaugurated the double-decker bus service in the city.

The double-decker buses would mainly ply on Sharea Faisal from Malir Halt to Zainab Market.

Speaking to the media at the inauguration ceremony, Memon said the Sindh government had promised the people that double-decker buses would be on the roads of Karachi by December 2025, and on December 31, the promise had been fulfilled.

He congratulated the entire nation in advance on the New Year and said the Sindh government would provide maximum transport facilities to the people of Sindh, starting with Karachi.

Memon said that on the instructions of the Sindh chief minister, efforts were under way to introduce double-decker buses on every major road in Karachi in 2026. New routes of electric vehicle buses were also being launched across Sindh, including Karachi, starting next week, he added.

He said the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party was aware of the fact that transport was a basic need of the people, and the CM had ensured that transport projects were designed to provide maximum benefit to the public.

The aim of introducing air-conditioned buses, low-fare buses, and subsidised fares was to make public transport more accessible for the people, he explained.

He said that around 1.5 million people travelled daily in Karachi through the People’s Bus Service, while 75,000 people used the Orange Line and Green Line BRT services. With the integration of these routes, efforts were being made to benefit up to 100,000 additional people.

In response to a question, he said the Sindh cabinet had allocated more than Rs9 billion for roads in Karachi’s industrial areas. Several mega projects were expected to be completed by March 2026, and work was currently under way on Shahrah-e-Bhutto, Link Road, Red Line BRT, Yellow Line BRT and other projects, he added.

He acknowledged that roads remain a challenge but said that continuous work was being done for their improvement under the personal supervision of the Sindh CM.

Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Murad and Sindh Government Spokesperson Mustafa Abdullah Baloch also attended the ceremony along with Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, Peoples Bus Service CEO Sohaib Shafiq, Peoples Bus Service Operational Manager Abdul Shakoor and others.

CM’s statement

In a statement issued on Wednesday, CM Murad Ali Shah hailed the inauguration of a new double-decker bus service in the city and described it as a special gift to the Karachiites.

The launch marked a significant step toward modernising urban mobility in Pakistan’s largest metropolis, the CM said as he extended his greetings to Karachi’s people on the commencement of this innovative service.

“The people of Karachi deserve better travel facilities,” he emphasised, underscoring his government’s commitment to improving daily commutes.

He added that better travel facilities for Karachi was no longer just a promise but a practical reality, with modern transport symbolising urban dignity and a convenient life.
