The Sindh Rangers, in coordination with the Special Investigation Unit, carried out an intelligence-based operation in the Garden area and arrested two injured members of the Jamil Chhanga extortion gang.
According to a Rangers spokesperson, the arrested suspects were identified as Hammad, alias Cheel, and Abdullah, while extortion slips, mobile phones, weapons and ammunition were recovered from their possession.
He said that during interrogation, the suspects revealed that they were in contact with overseas-based extortion kingpin Chhanga and, on his directives, were involved in distributing extortion slips, opening fire and spreading fear among factory owners, shopkeepers, builders and hotel owners in different parts of Karachi.
He added that they admitted to their involvement in firing incidents at an under-construction building on Jehangir Road, Al-Hayat Hotel in Soldier Bazaar and at Bridge Star on Nishtar Road on December 13 over the non-payment of extortion money, injuring two people as a result. He said the suspects can be clearly seen firing in the CCTV camera footage. They are habitual criminals with multiple FIRs registered against them, he added.
