Five cops martyred in Karak terrorist attack

KARAK/KOHAT: Five police personnel were martyred in a terrorist attack in the jurisdiction of Gurguri Police Station in Karak district, police officials said on Tuesday.

According to Regional Police Officer (RPO), Kohat Range, Abbas Majid Marwat, a police mobile was escorting a gas production company’s vehicle when terrorists opened fire, causing it to catch fire. As a result, five policemen were martyred on the spot.

The martyred policemen were identified as Shahid Iqbal, Arif, Samiullah, Safdar and driver Muhammad Ibrar.

RPO Abbas Majid Marwat told the media that during an exchange of fire in the mountainous area of Gurguri, police and CTD personnel killed eight terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He said the bodies of the militants were lying in the hilly terrain, while operations were ongoing to arrest other terrorists who managed to flee.

The funeral prayers of the martyrs were offered with full state honours at Police Lines Karak. Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi, Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, RPO Kohat Abbas Majid Marwat, Commissioner Kohat Division Motasim Billah, DPO Saud Khan, deputy commissioner Karak, senior military and civil officers, and relatives of the martyrs attended the funeral. Speaking to the media, Sohail Afridi condemned the attack, calling it a tragic and condemnable incident. He said those involved would be brought to justice and punished according to the law.

Meanwhile, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP commander Kaleemullah, associated with Wilayat Karak, said the group carried out the attack.
