ABBOTTABAD: A key fugitive accused in the abduction and murder case of Dr Warda Mushtaq has reportedly been killed in a police encounter, sources said on Sunday.

According to initial reports, the encounter took place in the Thandiani -Kundla area, where police engaged armed suspects during an operation. During the exchange of fire, Shamrez, described by authorities as a dangerous and most-wanted accused in the Dr Warda case, was killed on the spot, the sources added.

Dr Warda, a medical officer, was abducted and later brutally murdered in Abbottabad earlier this month, a crime that triggered widespread outrage across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly among the medical community and civil society. Following the incident, multiple suspects were arrested, while Shamrez had remained at large and was declared a prime fugitive in the case.

Security had been heightened in the region after the killing, and the provincial government had also constituted a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to ensure a transparent and comprehensive probe into the high-profile case.

Police officials have yet to issue an official statement confirming the details of the encounter. Further information is expected after completion of legal formalities and verification of the incident.
