Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon on Thursday attended a dinner organised by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), whose chief Zubair Habib highlighted the significant work done by police and the CPLC in collaboration.
Habib especially highlighted the recovery of abductees, mobile phones and vehicles, as well as the launch of the Zainab Alert app, which concerns missing children. He said the journey of mutual cooperation is very long. The task of this journey is to maintain an atmosphere of law and order, he added.
“Needless to say, the Sindh police are very good. It is evident from their performance. Having a good leader makes the institution stronger. We have gathered here today because a great personality is leaving us.”
Sharing a memory, he said: “I still remember meeting IG sahib in the case of the kidnapping of two sisters. He assured me there was no need to panic, as they would not let anything happen.”
Habib said IG Memon introduced modern police reforms under his command, adding that the S4 project, the faceless e-challan system and online verification are noteworthy. He said the Sindh police’s new unit, the Sindh Highway Patrolling, has made the journey from Karachi to Sukkur very smooth. Due to this unit, the crime rate in Karachi has clearly decreased, and the e-challan system has brought about a clear change in the traffic system, he added.
Memon thanked Habib and his team for organising the event. “I joined the police force in 1997. My acquaintance with the CPLC is from the rank of SSP.”
He said he has many golden memories associated with the CPLC. “As SSP Khairpur, I saw different situations of crime during my posting. After some time I was posted in Karachi as SSP Malir.”
He added that the solution is always to use technology in a positive way. “I surveyed all the entry and exit routes in Karachi. A perfect plan was prepared when there were about 42 routes.”
He also said there was collaboration with the CPLC for the installation of toll plaza cameras. “We used to work together. It was not known whether it was police or the CPLC staff.” He pointed out that after 2019 the CPLC got legal status. “No finger has ever been pointed on the role of the CPLC. This is a matter of pride. The CPLC collects data and completes the work in the best possible way.”
Memon said that around 22,000 people visited the e-ticketing facility centres. Police and the CPLC jointly facilitated them, he added. “Police only fight with criminals. When the role of police is undermined, it leads to low morale.”
He said that appreciating good deeds shows improvement in performance. “If we talk about law and order in the province today, CPLC statistics show that the Sindh police are doing the best job.”
He pointed out that Karachi’s rank on the World Crime Index dropped from the sixth place to the 128th place, which is a testament to the performance of the Sindh police. “The law and order situation in many other countries is worse than Karachi. Today people travel from Karachi to Sukkur in a peaceful environment, especially at night.”
Memon said the work that started to instal CCTV cameras in Karachi would continue. Around 40,000 cameras have been installed so far, and with the help of these cameras the crime rate has significantly reduced, he added. “The CPLC also plays an important role in the performance of police. The IT department of the Sindh police has done a commendable job as well.”
