ISLAMABAD: Sikh spiritual leader and Jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, has called on Sikh families to have more children. “It’s not a wise thing to have just one child. Even if a child is a gift from God, there will only be uncles and aunts if there are three or four children,” he said, urging Sikhs to expand their families. He delivered these remarks while addressing the Sangat during a special Gurmat Samagam.

Gargajj also referenced the rising population numbers of other communities and stated, “This is not a conservative thought. We must reflect on this. We cannot afford to decrease here. This is our land.”

Speaking again in Amritsar on Monday, he reiterated his call for Sikh families to have at least three or four children.

Although Sikhs form the largest population group in Indian Punjab—followed by sizeable Hindu and Muslim communities—the region has experienced a significant rise in migration in recent years. Punjabis have long Amoved abroad in search of better opportunities, while since the Green Revolution, labourers from states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have migrated to Punjab for work.

The trend of Punjabi migrants selling their homes and properties in many villages highlights the deep demographic impact migration has had on the population of Punjab.
