GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government Friday constituted a three-member committee to verify and take charge of all official assets currently in possession of ministers, advisers, and special assistants to the chief minister.
The decision came just days after Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Raja Shahbaz Khan suspended the powers of the GB government, nearly a month before the completion of its constitutional term.
According to a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), three officers from the Cabinet Department have been assigned to carry out the verification process.
The committee has been instructed to conduct a comprehensive audit of all assets used by ministers and advisors.
A detailed inventory will be prepared, and the respective private secretaries or personal assistants will take official custody of the verified items to ensure transparency and accountability. Once the process is complete, the committee will submit its final report to the competent authority.
The five-year term of the Gilgit-Baltistan government ended on November 24, after which a caretaker setup will take charge to oversee the upcoming elections.
In an official statement the other day, the CEC said the initiative aimed to ensure fair elections and prevent the misuse of public resources.
“Historically, discretionary funds have been exploited ahead of polls, undermining public trust. The Commission’s timely intervention seeks to break that cycle,” the statement added.
