Faisal Tirmizi named Pakistan’s new ambassador to Moscow

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Faisal Niaz Tirmizi has received his agrément from host country Russia, and he is expected to reach Moscow in a few weeks time where he will be Pakistan’s new ambassador.

He is presently Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE where he has officiated for three years. The Foreign Office was officially informed on Friday and when contacted by The News. Ambassador Tirmizi confirmed the news and said he will be moving to Moscow in a few weeks time after attending the farewell receptions he has been attending daily.

As is the protocol, Tirmizi should return home to call on the leadership in Islamabad before he moves to Moscow. Recently, ambassadors-designate have also been calling on the Naval and Airforce chiefs.

Tributes for the ambassador reflected the three years that he has spent in the UAE were heard this week when a Pakistani expatriate Dr Fatima Khaled commented, “This event is our way of acknowledging the Ambassador’s remarkable achievements. His dedication has made a lasting impact on both the diplomatic and cultural landscape of the UAE, and we are honoured to have had him represent Pakistan here.”

Fluent in Russian language which will greatly help him in his diplomatic duties, Tirmizi commented, “As a diplomat, my mission has always been to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in fields of trade and tourism I am proud to see strides we have made in strengthening these ties.”

An outstanding diplomat he has navigated bilateral challenges successfully in Abu Dhabi.

Awaiting his agre’ment now is Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan who was nominated as ambassador to UAE to replace Tirmizi.

The ambassador is one of the few in the Foreign Ministry who remains very active on X. This week he tweeted, “Indian arrogance and hubris followed by May 7 debacle have acted as a catalyst to strengthen old strategic linkages between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on the one hand and Pakistan and China on the other.

Thank you, Narendra Modi, for the best gift on your 75th birthday.”

Tirmizi joined the Foreign Office in 1993 and later served as ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic.

Born in 1968, he holds degrees of MSc and Masters Degree in International Studies & Diplomacy from School of Oriental and African Studies (UK).

He has also served at headquarters as section officer as well as a deputy director, director, director general and additional secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

While overseas the ambassador has held various diplomatic assignments in Pakistan Missions abroad: Ashgabat (1996-1999), Geneva-UN (2003-2006) and Abu Dhabi (2007-2010). He also served as consul general, Consulate General of Pakistan, Chicago (2013-2018).
