LAHORE: Former DPO Rahim Yar Khan Rizwan Gondal had to face a real test after he appeared before Punjab Assembly Privilege Committee on the privilege motion moved by PPP MPA from Rahim Yar Khan Mumtaz Chahang.
The committee was chaired by MPA Sami Ullah Khan and comprised of legislators including Bilal Yamin Satti, Col (retd) Ayub, Wasif Raan and others.
During the meeting, the DPO was seriously snubbed by senior legislator Sami Ullah Khan for uttering misleading remarks against the MPA and asked him to tender an apology after which Gondal tendered apology before the committee. A committee comprising Police, FIA and Home Department officials was also recommended to probe the matter.
During the meeting, MPA Chahang accused Gondal of misusing the powers during his tenure as DPO Rahim Yar Khan. Besides, he was also accused of supporting corrupt SHOs in notorious Katcha area where these officials allegedly own around 1,200 of acres each. Moreover, the DPO was also accused of not removing the SHO despite the registration of an FIR against him.
Chahang stated he had faced direct threats from the robbers of Katcha area but despite that, security was withdrawn from him. He also lamented that his call was not attended by the then DPO Rahim Yar Khan.
Member of the committee Wasif Raan also expressed dissatisfaction over the answer received from the DPO regarding the elements involved in the attack at the residence of brother-in-law of Chahang. At a time when Gondal started to explain his position and stated it was not fair to criticise police, Chairman of the committee Sami Ullah Khan snubbed him and warned him of issuing a false statement in this regard.
He warned the DPO that his recording would be played if he did not tender apology for issuing a false statement over which he immediately sought an apology before the committee. Gondal said he had attended the call of MPA Chahang that could be confirmed from the record.
