Strong Pak-China 75 years of friendship relations celebrated through basketball

The enduring friendship between Pakistan and China — often described as “higher than mountains and deeper than oceans” — found a vibrant expression on the basketball court as the Pak-China Friendship Cup All-Pakistan 3x3 Basketball Championship was successfully organised at the Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. The event marked the historic celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, demonstrating how sports can serve as a powerful instrument of diplomacy, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connectivity.

The championship commenced with participation from across the country, reflecting both the growing popularity of the 3x3 format and strong institutional backing behind the initiative. Organized under the auspices of the Federal Basketball Association (FBBA) in collaboration with the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and supervised by the Pakistan Basketball Federation (PBBF), the event showcased the shared commitment of stakeholders to promote sports as a bridge between nations.

Ouj-e-Zahoor, Secretary of the Federal Basketball Association, said the championship was designed not only to provide competitive opportunities for athletes but also to highlight the time-tested and deep-rooted relationship between Pakistan and China.

He emphasized that sports serve as a powerful bridge to enhance mutual understanding and people-to-people connections.

The event also served as a platform to promote sports diplomacy and youth engagement, reinforcing shared values of teamwork, discipline, and mutual respect between the two nations.

Ouj-e-Zahoor expressed optimism that similar sporting events in the future would further deepen Pakistan-China friendship and contribute to the development of basketball in the country.

The tournament featured competitions in three major categories — Women’s, Club, and Departmental — attracting a large number of teams from across the country and reflecting growing enthusiasm for basketball nationwide.

In the Women’s category, 28 teams participated, including prominent departmental sides such as Pakistan Army and WAPDA, illustrating the growing momentum of women’s sports in Pakistan. The Club category drew 48 teams from Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and other cities, underlining the rapid expansion of grassroots basketball nationwide. Similarly, 13 departmental teams — including Pakistan Army, WAPDA, Pakistan Police, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Ordnance Factories, and Pakistan Navy — competed in a highly competitive field.

A highlight of the championship was a special Pak-China Friendship exhibition match, symbolizing sports diplomacy in action. In a thrilling encounter, Islamabad Raptors defeated a Chinese club 19-16. Mavia scored six points for the winners, while Wang Chenghu contributed five points for the visiting side. The match was witnessed by officials from the Chinese Embassy, senior basketball administrators, and sports authorities, reinforcing the diplomatic significance of the event.

Speaking on the exhibition match, Liu Yonggang, CEO of China Three Gorges South Asia Investment, emphasized that the championship not only showcased exciting competition but also highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. Such initiatives, he noted, strengthen bilateral ties beyond traditional diplomacy.

The cultural dimension of the friendship was also celebrated when the Embassy of China in Pakistan hosted a cultural ceremony during the championship to mark the Chinese New Year — the Year of the Horse — promoting cultural exchange and goodwill.

On the competitive front, Pakistan WAPDA emerged as the dominant force, clinching titles in both the women’s and departmental categories. WAPDA Black defeated Garrisons Team 17-14 in the women’s final, while WAPDA Green overcame Army Red 21-14 in the departmental category, with Zain Khan scoring an impressive 11 points. In the club category, YMCA defeated Friends Club 20-17 to claim the championship.

The closing ceremony was attended by Director General Pakistan Sports Board Yasir Pirzada, along with President Pakistan Basketball Federation Brigadier (eetd) Muhammad Iftikhar Mansoor, PBBF Senior Vice President Imtiaz Rafi Butt, President Federal Basketball Association Ejaz Rafi Butt, and FBBA Secretary Ouj-e-Zahoor. Representatives from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan and senior officials from sports bodies, along with the Chinese club team, also participated, strengthening goodwill and fostering mutual respect.

Beyond competition, the Pak-China Friendship Cup demonstrated how sports can complement strategic cooperation, economic collaboration, and cultural ties between the two countries.

As Pakistan and China continue to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, trade, education, sports, culture, and technology, initiatives like this championship reinforce people- to-people connections, especially among youth.

The successful organisation of the Pak-China Friendship Cup sends a clear message: the Pakistan-China relationship is not confined to diplomacy and economics — it thrives in cultural exchanges, youth engagement, and sporting cooperation. Events like these strengthen mutual understanding, inspire athletes, and deepen a friendship that has stood the test of time.

As Pakistan and China celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the echoes of bouncing basketballs symbolize something far greater — a partnership built on trust, respect, and shared aspirations for peace, development, and regional stability.
