Uniting the world through sports

The inaugural World Sports Summit, held in Dubai from December 29-30, 2025 was officially opened by H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council. This mega-event brought together 1500 renowned personalities, including athletes, stakeholders, and the heads of major global bodies like FIFA and ICC, representing 50 different nations.

The summit was indeed an historic event. It was a star studded gala and a treat for spectators to see their favourite sports personalities gathered all on the same platform, thus showcasing unity of global personalities from multi-disciplinary sports and diversified languages and cultures. The superstar gathering gracing the event included the likes of: Our very own Arshad Nadeem, Olympic Gold Medalist in Javelin, Ronaldo Nazario from Football, Novak Djokovic and Paula Badosa from tennis and Manny Pacquiao from Combat Sports. The guest list also included famous sports club supremos such as Gianni Infantino, who is the current FIFA President.

The unprecedented gathering of sports superstars and administrators was indeed a milestone towards not only forging brotherhood and unity amongst the international sports fraternity, but also bringing people of the different nationalities together on one platform. More importantly, the mega event’s main objective was to chalk out a global order for the future of sports under Dubai’s 2033 vision.

Dubai’s 2033 sports vision objective:

The core objective of Dubai’s sports 2033 vision goes far beyond the global sports unification aspect. The original D33 economic blueprint strategy worked wonders for Dubai. Its successful implementation made Dubai the global financial hub for all business and tourism related activities (the figure 33 is significant for Dubai as it will mark the 200th anniversary of the Al Maktoum dynasty’s rule in Dubai). Using the proven D33 economic blueprint experience, it intends to make Dubai the hub for major sports related activities also. Before long, we could see Dubai as the epicentre for world sports excellence and, in the process, establishing Dubai as the next sports capital of the world.

Key takeaways emanating from the recently held D33 sports summit include:

The Financial Gains: The D33 sports strategy will serve as an economic windfall for the country. The target is to double the sports annual contribution to Dubai’s economy from AED 10.17 billion (= USD 2.77 B) to a staggering AED 18.3 billion (= USD 5 B) by the year 2033.

Talent Development: Another core objective of the summit has been to provide the infrastructure for talent development. The plan includes setting up of up to 1000 international training camps every year, equipped with world-class facilities, the idea being to attract the best athletes from around the world.

Priority Sports: The Dubai Sports Council has identified up to seventeen priority sports as part of the Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033. These include: Cricket, Football, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Motorsports, Rugby, Horseracing, Combat sports, Marine Sports, Swimming, Running, Cycling, Badminton and even E-sports (Dubai is already constructing Dubai Gaming City).

Elevating the spectator attendance: Physical engagement of spectators is the key objective here. The plan is to double the annual spectator numbers from the current 1.67 million to over 4 million by the year 2033, the objective being not only to increase the ticket revenue but also to create a supercharged atmosphere during sporting events. This doubling of spectator numbers would be achieved through various means such as increasing the number of annual sporting events from 500 to 1000, massive advertising campaigns and construction of smart stadiums. The global viewership is also planned to be increased manifold through use of the latest media and AI technologies to reach millions of global audiences.

Increasing involvement of the Private Sector: The plan is to increase the role of the Private Sector in funding major sporting events. The 2033 plan is for 90% of the sporting events held in Dubai to be sponsored by the private sector, hence reducing reliance on government subsidies. This way the key role of the government will be transformed from being a ‘provider’ to being a ‘regulator’.

Impact and Inspiration of the D33 event on Pakistan

The Dubai World Sports event promises to bridge the gap which currently exists between athletics South Asia and those from the rest of the world. The ‘Nadeem Factor’ played a pivotal role at the event for highlighting the immense sporting talent which the South Asian region possesses. Arshad Nadeem (the Pakistan Javelin Throw Gold medalist in the Paris Olympics) occupied centre stage at the event. He got maximum press coverage and was awarded the ‘Global Breakthrough Athlete Award’ in recognition for his record breaking 92.97m throw in the Paris Olympics. He was the only recipient to receive the award in this category. More so, he stood tall (he is 6’3” tall) amongst the league of top legends while receiving his award. These legends included the likes of Novak Djokovic the 24-time grand slam champion and Khabib Nurmagomedov the undefeated UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship related to Mixed Martial Arts) legend. Nadeem got a chance of getting to know both legends better, and even got a chance of a private meeting with Khabib, an episode which he described as a ‘golden moment’. Nadeem also interacted closely with another of his admirers Gianni Infantino, the FIFA President, who expressed his amazement at the record breaking 92.97m throw by Arshad Nadeem (an interaction which was highly publicized).

In conclusion, the inaugural World Sports Summit 2025 held recently in Dubai was truly historic in nature. The event was different as it was not just about hosting games. It was about bringing people of different nationalities, languages and cultures together on one platform. Sports legends from 50 different countries participated in the event. The integration of athletes, administrators and other stakeholders in such a large number from a diversified range of sports was indeed unique and lived up to the event’s official theme “uniting the world through sports”.

One key component in this unifying ecosystem was Arshad Nadeem. He was the only athlete to have been bestowed the coveted ‘Global Breakthrough Athlete Award’, indicative of the fact that talent and excellence can transcend all barriers, irrespective of country, race or religion.
