WASHINGTON: Israel is facing a growing public relations challenge in the United States (US) as opinion polls and media reports point to declining support among sections of American society, prompting a major $11 billion campaign to improve its image and rebuild public backing.

According to reports cited by Israeli media outlets, Israel’s public relations budget has increased significantly, with millions of dollars being allocated for efforts aimed at influencing American public opinion amid criticism over its policies and military actions.

The reports stated that polls indicate a shift in American attitudes, with around 60 per cent of Americans expressing opposition or criticism towards Israel while 37 per cent continue to support it. The decline has been particularly visible among younger Americans, while support among some segments of the American Jewish community has also reportedly weakened.

A report by ‘The Times of Israel’ said Israel had increased its public relations spending to around $730 million, with experts questioning whether financial campaigns alone could reverse damage to the country’s image.

Another report by ‘Haaretz’ said Israel was “bleeding support” in the United States and spending tens of millions of dollars in an attempt to change public perception. It noted that campaigns targeting specific American groups, including Christian conservatives, were part of efforts to strengthen support.

The reports said criticism surrounding Israel’s conduct in recent conflicts, including the war in Gaza and tensions involving Iran, has intensified the challenge for Israeli public diplomacy.

Israel’s image campaign has increasingly focused on the American public sphere, where policymakers and analysts view public opinion as a key arena of influence.

The reports added that Israel has allocated additional funds for campaigns aimed at regaining support among US conservatives and countering criticism that has affected its standing among parts of the American electorate.
