ISLAMABAD: Pakistan produced a commanding second-half performance to overwhelm Bangladesh 5-2 and book a blockbuster semi-final clash against arch-rivals India in the Under-18 Asia Cup at Kakamigahara, Japan, on Wednesday.
In a crucial last group match, Pakistan and Bangladesh were locked at 2-2 at halftime after an intense opening period. However, the Green Shirts raised their game dramatically after the break, striking three unanswered goals to seize complete control and march confidently into the last four.
Pakistan signaled their intentions early when Abdullah found the net in just the third minute before adding another goal to complete a brilliant brace. Adeel, Asam and Muhammad Yahya also got on the score sheet as Pakistan’s attacking unit repeatedly exposed gaps in the Bangladesh defence.
Bangladesh fought hard in the first half through goals from Tarikul Islam and Manna Islam, but they had no answer to Pakistan’s relentless pressure and superior finishing in the latter stages of the match.
Muhammad Yahya, whose energetic display inspired the team’s resurgence, was deservedly named Player of the Match. Pakistan’s forwards converted their chances clinically while the midfield and defensive units maintained their structure and discipline, ensuring Bangladesh never regained momentum after the interval.
The emphatic victory underlined Pakistan’s growing stature in the tournament and strengthened their credentials as serious contenders for the continental crown. Speaking after the match, Yahya expressed his delight at contributing to the team’s success and hoped to play another decisive role in the eagerly anticipated semi-final against India.
“I am thrilled to have helped Pakistan secure this important victory,” Yahya said. “I am grateful to my coaches for believing in me, giving me an opportunity to represent my country and helping me perform at this level.” Pakistan Hockey Federation President Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani congratulated the players and team management on the outstanding achievement, lauding their discipline, commitment and fighting spirit.
“This success reflects the tireless efforts of the players, coaches and support staff who are working hard to restore Pakistan hockey’s lost glory on the international stage,” Wani said. He hoped that the young squad would carry its winning momentum into the high-voltage encounter against India.
