RAWALPINDI: Young all-rounder Arafat Minhas announced his arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion, producing a dream ODI debut with a five-wicket haul as Pakistan celebrated a landmark occasion in their cricketing history against Australia at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

The left-arm spinner returned outstanding figures of 5 for 32, becoming the first Pakistan bowler to claim a five-wicket haul on ODI debut and ensuring the country’s 1,000th One-Day International was marked by a performance to remember.

On a day of historic significance, Arafat’s match-winning spell rattled the Australian batting line-up and provided Pakistan with a new hero for the future.

The left-arm spinner, who became Pakistan’s 261st ODI debutant on a landmark occasion for the country’s cricket history, justified the selectors’ faith with a match-turning spell that rocked Australia’s batting line-up and highlighted his credentials as one of the brightest prospects in Pakistan cricket.

Arafat wasted little time in announcing his arrival on the international stage. In just his fourth over, he struck twice in quick succession to remove Australian captain Josh Inglis for 13 and the experienced Marnus Labuschagne for a duck, reducing Australia to 63 for 3 in the 14th over. The youngster then delivered another telling blow moments later by dismissing Cameron Green without scoring, sending shockwaves through the Australian camp and firmly swinging momentum in Pakistan’s favour. He also accounted for Mathew Short and Nathan Ellis to further strengthen his credentials.

His efforts helped Pakistan bowl out Australia for 200 in the 45th over.

His dream debut came on a day already etched in Pakistan cricket history, with the hosts becoming only the third team in the world to feature in 1,000 ODI matches. Ahead of the start of the series opener, Arafat was presented with his ODI cap by Pakistan team manager Naveed Akram Cheema in a proud moment witnessed by teammates, officials and family members.

Despite the excitement surrounding his international debut and early success, the youngster remained grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.

“It is more about retaining your place in the Pakistan team that matters,” Arafat said after the match. “Years of hard work and performances in domestic cricket have earned me this ODI cap. I had already represented Pakistan in T20 Internationals, but the real challenge begins now. My family and I are very happy, but what matters most is consistent performance. The real excitement lies in cementing my place in the national side.”
