RAWALPINDI: Pakistan cricket entered an exclusive club on Saturday when the Green Shirts took the field against Australia in their 1,000th One-Day International, becoming only the third nation in world cricket to reach the remarkable milestone.
The historic match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium marked another proud chapter in Pakistan’s rich ODI history that spans more than five decades and includes memorable triumphs, most notably the 1992 World Cup victory and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy success. To commemorate the landmark occasion, a brief but impressive ceremony was held before the start of the opening ODI of the three-match series. Australian captain Josh Inglis presented a special souvenir to Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, congratulating Pakistan on completing 1,000 ODI appearances.
Pakistan joined an elite list of cricketing nations to have played 1,000 ODIs, underlining the country’s enduring contribution to the limited-overs format since making its ODI debut in 1973.
Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi described the achievement as a moment of immense pride for the entire nation.
“It is a great honour for me to represent Pakistan on such a historic occasion. Completing 1,000 ODIs is a reflection of the contributions and sacrifices made by generations of Pakistani cricketers. We are proud to be part of this rich legacy and will try our best to make this memorable day even more special with a strong performance,” Shaheen said.
The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, packed with enthusiastic supporters, provided a fitting venue for the milestone encounter. Fans arrived in large numbers to witness a match that not only opened a crucial ODI series against Australia but also celebrated a significant landmark in Pakistan cricket history.
Over the years, Pakistan have produced some of the world’s finest ODI cricketers, including legends such as Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam, all of whom have played major roles in shaping the country’s ODI legacy. The milestone adds further significance to the Pakistan-Australia series, with the hosts eager to mark their 1,000th ODI with a memorable victory against one of the world’s strongest cricketing nations.
