ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said that they will all work together to strengthen the Constitution, strengthen the hands of the establishment and make the country stronger.

He said the PPP would continue to carry forward the legacy of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and work for the strength and stability of the country under the 1973 Constitution.

The president was addressing a public gathering in Moro, Naushahro Feroze, on Thursday at the residence of Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar. The president also interacted with local notables and elected members of the area.

Addressing the public gathering, the president said, “The PPP had always worked under the framework of 1973 Constitution and would continue to uphold democratic values and constitutional supremacy. We will all work together to strengthen the establishment and make the country stronger.”

Zardari paid tribute to the sacrifices of Bhutto family, saying its martyrs had laid down their lives for the country. “If Pakistan exists, we exist,” he remarked.

Referring to regional tensions, President Zardari criticised the Indian government, alleging that atrocities against Muslims in India were not being highlighted by the media. He said the Indian leadership had “lost the ability to think rationally”.

The president said Pakistan had taught India a lesson during the May conflict and added that eight Indian aircraft involved in attacks on innocent Pakistanis were shot down. He further asserted that Pakistan had the capability to target 40 Indian aircraft but had exercised restraint.

Highlighting economic issues, Zardari said the government aimed to provide economic empowerment to the people and promote agriculture through modern technology and advanced farming methods. He said Pakistan should remain self-sufficient in food and strengthen itself economically to become a strong country. He said the government was aware of the people’s problems and was working to resolve issues for the benefit of future generations. He said Gwadar would bring positive economic change to Balochistan. He advised elected representatives to expedite development projects and continue serving the people. He said elected representatives must fulfill their responsibilities effectively to advance the country’s development and welfare of the people.
