A sessions court on Wednesday remanded a woman arrested for allegedly supplying cocaine and other narcotics across the city in police custody for questioning for three days.
The investigating officers in cases lodged against suspect Anmol alias Pinky filed separate criminal revision applications before District and Sessions Judge (South) Zahoor Ahmed Hakro, challenging the order of the Judicial Magistrate-XVIII that rejected the police plea for her physical remand on Tuesday.
After hearing the IOs and perusing the record, the judge set aside the magistrate’s order and remanded the suspect in police until May 15. He directed the Women Jail Karachi superintendent to hand over the custody of the suspect to the police for investigation purposes.
The court directed the police to produce the woman before the relevant magistrate on expiry of her remand. They may request for extension in her remand, it added. “The learned Judicial Magistrate-XVIII, Karachi South will pass appropriate order on such application without influence of this order,” the judge said.
The court was informed that the suspect was arrested on May 12 from the Garden area and was produced before the magistrate on the very day for remand purposes. The IOs stated that she was allegedly heading a narcotic gang and used to supply the narcotic through the established chain.
They stated that the police needed to interrogate the suspect to find the roots of this chain, which was not possible due to her being sent to jail. In his written order, the judge noted that the magistrate had not given proper reasons for remanding the suspect in judicial custody, adding that he may have considered the police’s plea and at least remanded her in police custody for some days, enabling the IO to probe her alleged involvement in other cases.
