Unbreathable air

Karachi used to be known as the city of lights but it is now turning into a city of pollution. Pollution is not confined to mere fumes from vehicles and industrial units. The burning of garbage and the ever increasing traffic mess are also putting this city in danger. Large sections of our population, including children and the elderly, are suffering from respiratory problems, allergies and other breathing-related diseases. There is little awareness of environmental protection and pollution is on the increase daily.

Air pollution is as much a matter of human rights as any other and the government and environmental authorities cannot keep ignoring this issue. It is time for them to actively regulate emissions and monitor their contribution to air pollution in the city. Better public transport and more tree plantation campaigns in the city are equally imperative.
