The Sindh cabinet has approved an increase in the upper age limit for vice chancellors of public universities from 62 to 65 years, a move aimed at widening the pool of eligible candidates, it emerged on Tuesday.

The proposal will now be placed before the provincial assembly for final approval. Once enacted, the revised ceiling will apply to future appointments across public sector universities in the province.

Officials said Sindh had remained the only province where the upper age limit for vice chancellors was capped at 62 years, while the federal government as well as Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan allow candidates up to 65 years.

The lower ceiling in Sindh had often excluded experienced and otherwise eligible senior academics from consideration.

Sources indicated that an early approval by the assembly could have immediate implications for ongoing appointments, including at the University of Karachi. They said a fresh advertisement for the vice chancellor’s position may be issued, as the one published last week carried the earlier age limit of 62 years.
