ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguard and promote press freedom in the country.
In his message on the World Press Freedom Day, the president called upon citizens to reject falsehood and support credible journalism.
In his message, PM Shehbaz Sharif promised a conducive environment for media to operate. He said timely dissemination of accurate, impartial and unbiased information remains the cornerstone of credible journalism.
Separately, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to a free, responsible and vibrant media, paying tribute to journalists on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
In separate messages, both leaders highlighted the media’s critical role in strengthening democracy, ensuring transparency and countering misinformation, while acknowledging the challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan.
Tarar, in a post on X, said the government remained committed to safeguarding media freedom alongside responsibility. He noted that Pakistan’s traditional media had long served as a pillar of public trust and democratic values, adding that it played a “responsible and patriotic role” in informing the world with balance and clarity during critical national moments.
He added that the media was increasingly adapting to modern tools and global connectivity, with digital platforms helping project Pakistan’s image and potential internationally. “We value the efforts of journalists and media workers and remain committed to media freedom, responsibility and a brighter future for media in Pakistan,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman described journalists as “steadfast guardians of truth and democracy,” stressing that press freedom was essential not only for democratic continuity but also for peace, economic recovery, sustainable development and the protection of human rights.
“Where truth flows freely, societies breathe; where it is silenced, hope begins to fade,” he said, urging journalists, media organisations and state institutions to collectively safeguard the integrity of information. He warned that the spread of disinformation in the digital age was eroding public trust and distorting democratic discourse.
Bilawal stated that press freedom must remain anchored in truth, accuracy and ethical responsibility, adding that transparency and responsible journalism were key to countering misinformation. He also noted that his party had faced sustained misinformation campaigns in the past but reiterated its commitment to upholding media freedom.
Calling for collective resolve, he urged all stakeholders to support a free and independent press, stating that a strong media was essential for building a just, informed and peaceful society.
