Marking World Press Freedom Day, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Senior Minister for Information Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday paid glowing tributes to journalists, reaffirming their commitment to press freedom, the protection of media professionals and the promotion of democratic values in Pakistan.
In his message, Shah emphasised that freedom of the press is indispensable for the strengthening of democracy and the establishment of a transparent society. He described journalism as the fourth pillar of the state, stressing that its independence must be respected by all.
He lauded journalists as the voice of truth and justice, calling them a source of pride for society. He paid homage to those media professionals who have lost their lives in the line of duty, acknowledging their sacrifices in upholding the principles of free and fair reporting.
He said his government is taking all possible measures to ensure the protection and rights of journalists. He highlighted the strict implementation of the Protection of Journalists Act in the province, aimed at safeguarding media professionals against threats and harassment.
He also noted that constructive criticism by a free press plays a vital role in improving governance. “We have always taken criticism positively, as an independent media contributes to the betterment of government institutions.”
He further pointed out that his government has been at the forefront in supporting journalists through welfare initiatives, including an endowment fund for their well-being. Stressing the importance of ethical journalism in the digital age, he urged media professionals to uphold journalistic values amid rapidly evolving technologies.
He also appreciated the democratic role played by press clubs and journalistic organisations, noting that World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of both the responsibilities and the freedoms associated with journalism.
The CM reaffirmed that his government firmly opposes any form of restriction or censorship on the media, and pledged continued support and protection for journalists.
Meanwhile, Memon also congratulated and paid tribute to journalists across the country. In his message, he underscored that a free, responsible and informed media is the foundation of any democratic society.
He said journalism serves as an effective bridge between the public and the corridors of power, ensuring accountability and transparency in governance. According to him, this role of the media is crucial for the stability and the strength of democracy.
He highlighted that the Pakistan Peoples Party has a long-standing history of advocating for press freedom. He noted that the vision of the martyred Pakistan Peoples Party leaders Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto placed great emphasis on the freedom of expression.
He said the party made enduring sacrifices for media independence during periods of dictatorship. He added that under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the party continues to stand at the forefront in protecting journalists’ rights and promoting democratic values.
The senior minister outlined several initiatives undertaken by the provincial government for the welfare of journalists, including health insurance schemes, financial assistance and housing projects.
