ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that people do not need charity in the form of subsidies but their due rights, calling for the immediate abolition of the petroleum levy and a review of agreements with independent power producers (IPPs).

Addressing two separate public outreach events in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Saturday, he criticised dual system in the country, stating that two systems cannot run in one state.

He said while homes of the poor are being demolished in settlements such as Bari Imam and other katchi abadis, action against elite-owned properties has been halted, terming it a clear double standard.

The JI chief also announced that the party aims to enroll five million members during its ongoing public outreach campaign, adding that around two million members have already been registered nationwide. He said the party also plans to establish 50,000 public committees across the country.
