The Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) has announced a complete boycott of the semester examinations scheduled to commence on May 5, citing the administration’s failure to fulfil its responsibilities and accept the teachers’ demands.

The decision was taken at a general body meeting of the university’s teachers’ association held at the Chinese Auditorium on Monday. Participants warned that if their demands were not met, April 30 would be observed as a “black day” accompanied by a strong protest, followed by a boycott of examinations from May 5.

The meeting held a detailed discussion on the university’s overall financial condition, particularly the mounting dues payable to faculty members, which it termed a result of administrative inefficiency.

The participants raised a number of demands, including implementation and payment of revised house ceiling rates, clearance of long-pending evening programme dues, leave encashment in accordance with leave balances, payments for paper checking, remuneration for PhD and MPhil teachers and examiners, and restoration of tax rebates, among others.

The meeting also decided to undertake a review of the University of Karachi’s budget to identify and address existing anomalies.
