Eight dead, 10 injured in gas pipeline explosion

HARIPUR: Eight people, including a woman, died and 10 others suffered burns and fractures when a main Sui Northern Gas supply line caught fire in the Hattar Industrial Estate area, some 14 kms from Haripur city on Thursday evening. The cause of death was suffocation and minor burns, hospital sources said.

District Police Officer Haripur Shafiullah Khan told journalists that at around 6:20pm on Thursday evening, the fire erupted in the main line of SNGPL due to which eight residents, a woman and seven children died. He said that the cause of fire in the gas line was not immediately known and would be determined during the investigation later.

He said it was the main supply line and that the gas supply from Wah Cantt and Kot Adu had been stopped. The fire was heavy and took almost three hours to extinguish.

The DC called ambulances from Haripur and got the dead and injured shifted to Trauma centre and RHC Kot Najibullah.

Those killed were identified as Mobin Babar, 7, Asma Bibi, 14, Aleena Bibi, 16, Iqbal, 7, Shahidullah Khan, 9, Arif Khan, 15, Ali Raza Khan, 18, and Abdullah Rehman Khan.
