ISLAMABAD: The Customs Department has arrested its two preventive officers on the charges of collusion and suspected swapping of silver bullions with lead.
The department deputed a team to deposit seized 688kgs of silver at the Pakistan Mint, Lahore as per the laid-down rules and procedures. Two preventive officers, Arif Ali Jumani and Samiullah Achakzai, were detailed for safe transportation of silver packed in 36 sealed boxes from the State Warehouse, Quetta. The boxes reached the Quetta International Airport from where these were transported to the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore.
The sealed boxes were moved to the Pakistan Mint, Lahore and were unpacked in the presence of both officers and the mint staff. After a thorough examination, it was found that bullions weighing 400kgs were made of lead.
The Collectorate of Customs Enforcement, Quetta constituted a team for inquiry. The CCTV footage of Safe City Quetta showed that Arif Ali Jumani and Samiullah Achakzai deliberately swapped the vehicle carrying the original silver bullions with some other vehicle carrying fake/lead bricks of the same denomination. Accordingly, an FIR was lodged and both the officers were arrested.
