KARACHI: Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Md Iqbal Hussain Khan said ties with Pakistan are gaining momentum, citing recent high-level exchanges as evidence of both sides’ commitment to stronger relations.
Speaking at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Monday, he described the current phase as a “golden opportunity” to expand cooperation. While challenges remain, particularly in air and maritime links, these can be resolved through coordination. “I do not see any major barriers that cannot be overcome,” he said.
He highlighted growing cultural and people-to-people links, including exchanges of artists, participation of Bangladeshi players in the Pakistan Super League, and more than 100 Bangladeshi students studying in Pakistan. He added that Bangladeshi patients are increasingly seeking medical treatment in Pakistan, including for transplants and cancer care.
The envoy also pointed to potential cooperation in minerals, noting Bangladesh’s demand for limestone and interest in Pakistan’s Thar coal reserves. Chairperson Businessmen Group (BMG) Zubair Motiwala said bilateral trade remains below $1 billion, far short of potential. He urged closer collaboration, particularly in supporting Bangladesh’s garment sector through technology transfer and value addition.
He called for easier visas, dedicated business help desks, stronger banking links and direct flights between Karachi and Dhaka to boost trade. He also welcomed the start of direct maritime shipments.
Motiwala identified opportunities in energy, minerals, healthcare, education and the blue economy, and announced that KCCI will send a trade delegation to Bangladesh in early May 2026. KCCI President Muhammad Rehan Hanif said relations are shifting towards a trade-led partnership, with scope for deeper cooperation in textiles, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and IT.
