RAWALPINDI: The Special Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi has remanded 41 PTI workers, arrested during a protest on the Adiala Road on Tuesday, to the custody of Saddar Baroni Police Station on an eight-day physical remand.

The court directed police to present the accused again on April 16 with a progress report on the investigation. On Wednesday, police produced the 41 suspects before the court and requested a 20-day physical remand, arguing that further investigation was required to identify the accused, apprehend those who fled the scene, and recover arson materials, siege equipment and mobile phones. However, the court approved an eight-day remand.

The accused are charged with illegally assembling on the Adiala Road despite the enforcement of Section 144 and allegedly attacking police when asked to disperse. Police told the court that protesters pelted stones, injuring nine officers and attempting to pressure the Punjab government through violence.

The Saddar Baroni Police had registered a case against former PTI chairman Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khanum for allegedly leading a protest outside Adiala Jail, resisting police and engaging in violent acts. Police arrested 41 protesters at the scene and seized more than a dozen vehicles allegedly used in the protest.
