ISLAMABAD: Gas production from Waziristan Block has risen to around 100 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) following the start-up of the Spinwam-1 well, adding 40 mmscfd of gas and boosting domestic supply.

The new well, operated by Mari Energies Limited under the Waziristan Joint Venture (WJV), also produces around 200 barrels per day of condensate. Combined output from Spinwam-1 and the earlier Shewa-1 discovery now totals about 100 mmscfd of gas and 800 barrels per day of condensate, officials said.

Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik inaugurated the project, saying the development would help reduce reliance on imported fuels and strengthen energy security. He added that domestic exploration efforts were helping Pakistan manage regional supply disruptions more effectively.

Spinwam-1 is the second successful exploratory well in the block, following Shewa-1, which had already initiated gas flows into the system. Output from both wells is being fed into the national grid through infrastructure developed by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.

The Waziristan Joint Venture comprises Mari Energies Limited (55 per cent, operator), Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (35 per cent) and Orient Petroleum Inc (10 per cent). Officials described the project as a key milestone achieved under challenging operational and security conditions. The minister acknowledged the contributions of law enforcement agencies, engineers and field staff involved in the development.

Mari Energies Managing Director and CEO Faheem Haider said the addition of Spinwam-1 builds on the success of Shewa-1 and reflects the joint venture’s commitment to developing indigenous hydrocarbon resources.
