Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about the potential risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), flash floods and landslides in northern parts of the country from April 1 to April 10.
Vulnerable areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to face heightened risks due to an approaching widespread weather system. The NDMA said that areas near glacier termini were particularly exposed, as melting ice combined with heavy rainfall could trigger floods, mudslides and landslides.
It noted that temperatures in the northern mountainous regions had remained above normal in recent days, further increasing the likelihood of glacial melt and associated hazards. Local communities were urged to remain alert and called on federal ministries, provincial governments, district administrations and municipal bodies to closely monitor vulnerable GLOF sites.
The NDMA called for ensuring early warning systems are fully operational, evacuation plans are ready and emergency response mechanisms remain active. Rescue agencies, including Rescue 1122, civil defence and fire services have been directed to stay on high alert and maintain readiness throughout the forecast period.
