Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) on Monday marked World Zero Waste Day with a series of activities aimed at promoting cleanliness, waste reduction, and environmental awareness across the district'’s urban and rural areas.
Chief Executive Officer of RWMC, Rana Sajid Safdar, said World Zero Waste Day underscored the need for collective action to protect the environment. He noted that waste reduction, recycling and improved sanitation could help curb pollution and ensure a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
He urged citizens to actively participate in cleanliness campaigns, adopt proper waste disposal practices and make hygiene a part of daily life. Small measures such as keeping homes, streets, markets and places of worship clean, he added, play a vital role in achieving a zero-waste city.
Through the Clean Punjab programme, an anti-littering campaign and other outreach initiatives, the company conveyed to residents that reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling are essential for environmental protection and the creation of a healthy, sustainable society. RWMC’s communication teams visited markets and engaged with food stall owners, hoteliers, fruit and vegetable vendors, and grocery shopkeepers, raising awareness about food wastage.
Citizens were urged to purchase food according to their needs, minimise waste, and separate organic and recyclable materials before handing them over to sanitation workers. Informational pamphlets were also distributed.
Despite persistent rainfall on Monday, RWMC staff remained active in the field, continuing routine operations, including drain clearance, waste collection, and mechanical road sweeping, to facilitate residents.
Under the Clean Punjab programme, authorities are seeking to improve sanitation through more efficient systems, regular waste collection, manual sweeping and sustained public awareness campaigns.
