LAHORE: The sixth match of Pakistan Super League 2026 at the Gaddafi Stadium produced a sensational finish as Karachi Kings chased down a modest target of 129 to defeat Lahore Qalandars by four wickets with three balls to spare.
The contest was marked by disciplined bowling, fluctuating momentum and late drama involving a penalty that shifted the balance decisively in Karachi’s favour.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Lahore Qalandars endured a difficult outing, finishing at 128 for nine in 20 overs. Karachi finished their outing at 131 for six on 19.3 overs. Qalandars innings never gained momentum, with wickets falling regularly.
The Qalandars’ innings began poorly as Fakhar Zaman fell for just 1 in the opening over, followed by Mohammad Naeem (13 off 12 balls) soon after. At 28 for two inside four overs, Lahore were under pressure. Abdullah Shafique provided some stability with a fluent 33 off 24 balls, striking four boundaries and a six, but his dismissal at the end of the seventh over halted momentum.
By the end of powerplay, Lahore had managed 42 runs for two wickets, but the early losses meant they were unable to fully capitalise on fielding restrictions.
Parvez Hossain Emon (12) and Haseebullah Khan (28 off 30 balls) attempted to rebuild, with Haseebullah anchoring the middle overs. Sikandar Raza added 18 off 20 balls, including a six, but neither batter could push on to a substantial score.
Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi tried to inject momentum with a quick six but was dismissed for 7, while the lower order collapsed under sustained pressure. Usama Mir (1) and Haris Rauf (4) fell cheaply, leaving Lahore struggling to reach a competitive total.
Karachi’s bowlers were relentless as Adam Zampa delivered a superb spell of 4 overs, 11 runs, 2 wickets, including a maiden, while Mir Hamza (2/14) and Moeen Ali (2/31) struck crucial blows. Hasan Ali, Salman Agha, and Abbas Afridi chipped in with a wicket apiece, ensuring Lahore never found fluency.
Chasing 129, Karachi Kings began shakily, losing David Warner (8) and Salman Agha (0) in the second over to Shaheen Afridi’s fiery spell. At 10/2, the chase looked uncertain.
Muhammad Waseem steadied the innings with a patient 38 off 37 balls, supported by Saad Baig (19 off 21). Together, they pushed Karachi to 39/3 in the eighth over. Waseem’s dismissal at 82/4 in the 14th over left the match finely balanced.
Moeen Ali contributed 18 before falling at 88/5, and Khushdil Shah added 13 before departing in the penultimate over. With Karachi at 120/6 in the 19th over, the game was still open.
Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled brilliantly, finishing with 4 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, dismantling Karachi’s top order and keeping Lahore in contention. He was well supported by Ubaid Shah, who bowled a maiden and conceded just 11 runs in 3 overs, and Mustafizur Rahman, who picked up 1/20 in his 4 overs.
However, Lahore’s hopes unraveled in dramatic fashion. With Karachi needing 14 runs off the final over, the Qalandars were penalised five runs for unfairly changing the condition of the ball. This reduced the target to just 9 runs off 6 balls, a decisive moment that swung momentum.
Abbas Afridi seized the opportunity, smashing 10 runs off just 2 balls, including a six, to seal victory for Karachi in 19.3 overs. Azam Khan on the other end remained not out at 14 that came in 12 balls with one four.
The clash between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars was a gripping contest defined by disciplined bowling, fluctuating momentum and late drama. While Shaheen Afridi’s brilliance gave Lahore hope, the penalty for ball tampering proved costly, handing Karachi a lifeline they capitalised on.
For Karachi, the victory showcased resilience and composure under pressure, while Lahore will rue missed opportunities and disciplinary lapses. The result not only adds spice to the PSL rivalry but also underlines the fine margins that define success in T20 cricket.
