Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Monem Zafar Khan has announced an education campaign to support underprivileged segments of the society for education of their children.
Addressing a press conference at the Karachi JI headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq, Khan said the education crisis in Sindh had reached an alarming level with around 7.8 million children out of school.
He said that out of 41,000 public sector schools in the province, nearly 3,000 were non-functional, 76 per cent lacked electricity, 15,000 did not have access to drinking water, and about 10,000 schools were without proper washroom facilities, terming the overall situation extremely serious.
He announced that the JI had launched a ‘Parho Parhao [Read and Educate]’ campaign under which books, stationery, school bags and shoes would be provided to deserving students.
As part of the initiative, 15 camps would be set up across Karachi, whereas in the first phase, educational materials would be collected from households.
The campaign would continue until April 20.
The JI leader appealed to philanthropists to participate actively so that no child was deprived of education due to financial constraints.
The campaign in Karachi would be supervised by Deputy Secretary Waqar Azeemi.
He added that under the ‘Bano Qabil’ programme, more than 70,000 students had been trained, whereas, thousands more were currently benefitting.
He said Karachi’s issues could only be resolved through the transfer of powers to the grassroots level, honest leadership and elimination of corruption.
He criticised past political forces for compromising on the city’s rights and reiterated the demand for an empowered city government so that Karachi’s resources were spent on the city itself.
