LAHORE: Senate Chairperson Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Friday called for political reconciliation, urging the country’s divided leadership to prioritise economic stability and democratic integrity over “point-scoring”.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the 11th Pakistan Footwear Material and Machinery Show (PFMMS) 2026 at the Expo Centre, Gilani described the current moment as a critical juncture for the country’s diplomacy and industrial development.

He termed Pakistan’s recent efforts to mediate between Iran and the US a “diplomatic success”, saying the country is increasingly drawing global attention. “Pakistan is playing the role of a bridge,” he said, expressing hope that the initiative would contribute to lasting reconciliation.

On domestic political tensions, Gilani underscored the principle of separation of powers. Responding to a question on the potential release of the PTI founder, he said the matter rests solely with the judiciary. He also defended the Senate’s administrative spending, rejecting criticism over the purchase of a Rs90 million vehicle as “propaganda” and maintaining that it was approved within the 2024-25 fiscal year budget.

Turning to the industrial outlook, Gilani said Pakistan has emerged as the world’s sixth-largest footwear producer, exporting to more than 60 countries and generating around $176 million in annual revenue.

“The footwear sector is a vital pillar of our manufacturing economy,” he said, adding that with around 60 per cent of the population under the age of 30, the industry must strengthen links between academia and industry to build a future-ready workforce.

The exhibition also highlighted shifting regional trade dynamics. A representative of the Guangdong Footwear Manufacturers and Shoes Materials Association pointed to a sharp rise in Chinese participation, increasing from 10 exhibitors in 2023 to nearly 100 this year.

“The expansion reflects strong confidence in the Pakistani market,” the representative said, citing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a key driver of foreign investment and technology transfer.

Despite the upbeat tone, local industry leaders pressed for policy support. Chairperson of the Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association (PFMA) Rashid Islam called on the government to designate footwear as a key industrial sector and reduce customs duties on raw materials to improve global competitiveness.

He added that the three-day event, which runs through March 29, would serve as an important test of the industry’s transition towards greener and more technologically advanced manufacturing.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of honorary shields to industry figures, including PFMA Convener Mansoor Ahsan and Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Faheemur Rehman Sehgal, with organisers expecting a record year for industrial collaboration.
