ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, whose assassination in an Israeli strike constitutes a profound and grievous loss amid the ongoing regional conflict.
Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed along with his son and several companions in an Israeli airstrike near Tehran, a fact confirmed by Iranian authorities.
In a statement issued here, Sheikh Waqas strongly condemned the incident and extended heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family. He stated, “We pray that Allah grants the departed soul the highest ranks in Jannah, blesses the family with patience and fortitude, and that his lifelong contributions continue to guide and strengthen Iran’s path forward during these challenging times.”
Waqas said that the PTI condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the US and Israeli aggression that resulted in the assassination of Ali Larijani. He called on the international community to take decisive measures to prevent escalating tensions in the region and to address these blatant violations of international law.
He added that Ali Larijani was a distinguished and highly respected political figure in Iran, having served as the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament for many years. He was widely recognised as a wise, experienced and prudent leader, who played a pivotal role in shaping both domestic and foreign policies and made significant contributions to maintaining internal stability and balanced foreign relations.
“His martyrdom represents a significant setback to the nation’s leadership and security apparatus. Throughout his extensive career—including his tenure as Speaker of the Parliament and service in various high-level advisory and executive roles—Ali Larijani demonstrated unwavering dedication, intellectual rigor and steadfast commitment to Iran’s national interests amid formidable challenges,” he added.
He emphasised that, in this time of sorrow, Ali Larijani’s enduring legacy stands as a powerful source of inspiration, demonstrating that exemplary leaders not only build resilient institutions but also uphold principles that transcend their individual tenure. “His resilience—and the spirit of those who serve with honour—continues to guide and inspire future generations,” he added.
Waqas reiterated that such incidents are not only a major human tragedy but also serve to exacerbate regional tensions. He emphasised that the current moment demands the international community—particularly the Muslim Ummah—take concrete measures to restore peace and stability in the region.
“We hold that peace, tolerance and dialogue remain the only viable path forward, and all parties must act responsibly to prevent further loss of human lives. May this moment of mourning strengthen our collective resolve—to uphold core values, foster unity, and move forward with fortitude in pursuit of the welfare of the nation,” he added.
He demanded the immediate release of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, describing him as the sole unifying force both within Pakistan and the entire Ummah, capable of averting looming crises through his vision, courage and foresight.
Waqas urged the judiciary to promptly issue orders for Imran’s release, along with those of all other political detainees, including his wife Bushra Bibi, as they continue to be held in what he termed fabricated, politically motivated cases. He emphasised that such unjust imprisonment undermines democracy and the rule of law and must be rectified without delay.
