SUKKUR: An assistant guard of a freight train lost his life, while 12 passengers sustained injuries after Shalimar Express collided with the stationary train at Lakha Road station in District Naushahro Feroze on Sunday.
Two bogies and the engine of Shalimar Express were damaged when it hit the stationary freight train parked on a loop line at Lakha Road station.
As a result of the collision, the train driver and assistant driver miraculously survived, while assistant guard of the freight train, Nadeem Shah, lost his life. He was pulled out of the bogie after hectic efforts of half-an-hour.
The incident also left 12 passengers of Shalimar Express injured, who were shifted to hospital by Rescue 1122, Railways and Sindh Police. The railway administration and police arrived at the scene promptly after receiving the information.
Later, relief trains were dispatched from Kotri and Rohri for the affected passengers.
According to initial reports, the accident might have occurred due to a problem with the point or fork, which was under further investigation.
Taking notice of the incident, the railway authorities have started a full inquiry into the incident.
DS Railways Jamshaid Alam said the affected track will be cleared in due course of time.
