Amid the prevailing security situation in the country, particularly in Karachi and the rest of Sindh, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has intensified joint operations with other sensitive and intelligence agencies.
During an intelligence-based operation, the CTD arrested a terrorist affiliated with the banned outfit Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), also referred to as Fitnatul Hindustan. The suspect was listed in the CTD Red Book.
According to a press statement issued by CTD DIG Ghulam Azfar Mahesar and SSP Irfan Bahadur, the arrested suspect was identified as Amjad, son of Gohram. A pistol was also recovered from his possession. Initial investigations revealed that the suspect was associated with the banned BLF, which had links with elements operating from a neighbouring country and carried out terrorist activities upon receiving targets from across the border.
During interrogation, the suspect disclosed that in 2022, he travelled to the neighbouring country where he received training with the assistance of extremist elements. The training included the use of weapons and planting of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The suspect also reportedly revealed that on the instructions of the organiation, he conducted reconnaissance of vehicles moving towards sensitive installations from the Mauripur area and passed the information to the group.
He also disclosed during investigation that he was a nephew and accomplice of Zafar, alias Mama, a militant affiliated with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) who was killed in the Jaffar Express train attack.
The suspect also confessed that he, along with his accomplices, conducted reconnaissance to carry out a targeted killing of a police officer deployed in Mauripur. He also reportedly revealed that other members of the group were planning major terrorist attacks in Karachi.
The CTD said raids were being conducted with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies to arrest the suspect’s accomplices. Further investigations are under way.
