ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has shown significant improvement in his eyesight after receiving treatment for a retinal condition known as Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), according to a medical board that examined him at the Adiala jail on Tuesday.

In a press statement issued by the administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a two-member medical board comprising senior ophthalmologists evaluated the 74-year-old former premier following his second intravitreal anti-VEGF injection administered for the treatment of CRVO. The board comprised Prof Dr Nadeem Qureshi, head of the Vitreoretinal Department at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, and Prof Dr M Arif Khan, head of the Ophthalmology Department at PIMS Islamabad.According to the statement, the doctors conducted a comprehensive eye examination that included assessment of visual acuity, fundoscopic examination, slit lamp examination and optical coherence tomography, a specialised imaging test used to examine the retina and detect swelling or fluid accumulation. “The board concluded that his vision has improved remarkably which is substantially good vision at this stage,” the statement said, adding the medical team has advised continuation of previously planned care and follow-up treatment. Health officials say intravitreal anti-VEGF injections are commonly used to treat retinal diseases associated with abnormal blood vessel leakage and swelling in the retina, including CRVO. The medication is injected directly into the eye to reduce fluid accumulation and restore retinal function.
