LAHORE: Pakistan women’s cricket team capped off their ODI series in style, defeating South Africa by a commanding 119 runs in the third and final match at Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban.
The victory was built on Sadaf Shamas’ brilliant 97 and skipper Fatima Sana’s all-round heroics, as Pakistan defended a formidable total of 306. After losing opener Gul Feroza (13) early, Sadaf combined with Sidra Amin (41) in a 130-run stand for the second wicket. Sadaf’s innings of 97 off 71 balls, studded with 16 fours and a six, was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Falling just three runs short of her maiden ODI hundred, she nonetheless set the tone for Pakistan’s dominance.
Sidra’s dismissal soon after left Pakistan wobbling at 164-3, and further quick wickets saw them at 216-5. But skipper Fatima Sana (60 off 41)* and Najiha Alvi (36) steadied the innings with a 65-run partnership, ensuring Pakistan crossed the 300-run mark. Fatima’s late fireworks, including five sixes, gave Pakistan the finishing kick they had lacked in earlier matches.
Chasing 307, South Africa were rocked early. Debutant Tasmia Rubab dismissed Tazmin Brits (4), before Fatima Sana struck twice in three balls to remove Laura Wolvaardt (1) and Sune Luus (0), reducing the hosts to 7-3 inside two overs.
Although Faye Tunnicliffe (47) and Annerie Dercksen (54) rebuilt with an 85-run stand, Pakistan’s spinners regained control. Nashra Sundhu (2-25) and Sadia Iqbal (3-41) dismantled the middle order, while Umm-e-Hani (2-35) chipped in with crucial wickets. South Africa were bowled out for 187 in 37 overs. The disciplined attack ensured South Africa never recovered from their early collapse.
