ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Lt. General (retd) Nazir Ahmad Butt has said that accountability must not be allowed to turn into persecution or victimisation, but should function as genuine answerability under the law.

Speaking briefly with The News on Tuesday evening, the NAB chairman expressed satisfaction with the performance and working of the bureau. He said that over the past three years, NAB has introduced significant improvements to its operational procedures and institutional approach.

He said that NAB should serve as a deterrent against corruption, particularly for those who have plundered the country and damaged the national economy. However, he emphasized that individuals conducting their affairs within the framework of the Constitution and law should have no reason to fear the accountability process. He added that this balanced approach has helped transform NAB into an institution that supports economic stability and encourages business confidence rather than creating unnecessary hurdles. The chairman, who is set to complete his three-year tenure next month, said he had not yet made a decision regarding a possible extension in office. He added that he would respond to any proposal in this regard once it is formally presented.
