LANDIKOTAL: The Pakistan customs foiled a smuggling attempt at the Pak-Afghan Torkham border and recovered 30 kilograms of silver worth approximately Rs48 million in open market, officials said on Saturday.

Customs collector Ghulam Mustafa told the media that the seizure was made during a routine search at the import terminal when a truck arriving from Afghanistan was inspected.

The silver had been concealed inside the tyres of the vehicle to evade detection. The truck was reportedly returning after transporting Afghan families. Ghulam Mustafa said legal action had been initiated against those involved, adding that further investigation was underway to trace the network behind the smuggling attempt.

It may be added that all border points had been closed after Pakistan and Afghanistan clashed at various border points on October 11 last year. However, trucks carrying Afghan families returning to Afghanistan have permission to cross Pakistan-Afghan border points.
