COLOMBO: Pakistan’s most prolific T20 batsman in recent times, Sahibzada Farhan, has sent out a strong message ahead of the much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India, expressing confidence that the form which has defined his recent outings will continue to flourish on the big stage.
Fresh from a string of commanding performances, including a memorable knock in the Asia Cup final in Dubai, Farhan appears unfazed by reputation, rivalry or pressure. His approach is strikingly simple yet devastatingly effective.
“I only concentrate on my batting rather than the opposition,” Farhan said with calm assurance. “I hardly even consider who is bowling at me. I play the ball on merit, and that has been my forte.”
In an era where few batsmen have managed to negotiate Jasprit Bumrah with authority, Farhan stands out as one who has handled the Indian pace spearhead with rare composure. But for the stylish right-hander, the contest is never about the bowler’s name.
“Bumrah or any other Indian bowler, I only focus on the delivery being bowled,” he remarked. “When I get to the crease, I try to make the best of the opportunity in front of me.” His exceptional innings against the USA on Tuesday once again underlined his growing stature in Pakistan’s T20 set-up. Setting the tone for a formidable total, Farhan combined timing with temperament, reading the conditions to perfection.
“I knew this wicket had runs in it,” he explained. “It was just about applying myself and playing each ball on merit. Once I got going, the momentum followed.” Farhan was quick to acknowledge skipper Babar Azam’s vital role at the other end. The duo’s partnership provided stability and acceleration in equal measure.
“Babar’s contribution was very important,” Farhan said. “He kept scoring consistently, which allowed me to stay relaxed and play my natural game.” Looking ahead, the opener made it clear that his hunger is far from satisfied. With the India showdown looming large, Farhan is eager to rise to the occasion once again.
“I’m looking forward to the upcoming matches, especially against India. The aim is always to contribute to the team’s success.” He also dismissed suggestions from an Indian journalist that recent Pakistan-India T20 encounters have been one-sided affairs.
“It’s not like that,” Farhan asserted. “Even in the Asia Cup, we kept India under pressure for most of the game. We only lost our grip in the final overs. These matches are always closely fought.”
