ISLAMABAD: The scale of the tragedy at Masjid and Imambargah Khadijat-ul-Kubra has deepened as the death toll from Friday’s suicide bombing climbed to 37, a spokesman for the Islamabad Police confirmed when contacted, Monday.

Initially, 31 worshippers were reported martyred in the immediate aftermath of the February 6 blast. However, hospital sources and police spokespersons confirmed that six additional victims passed away over the last 72 hours while undergoing treatment for critical injuries.

The attack occurred during a time of high congregation, leaving dozens more injured and local medical facilities struggling to manage the influx of casualties. This latest incident followed a grim pattern of attacks on religious sites across the region. Masjid and Imambargah Khadijat-ul-Kubra, a prominent center, was filled with worshippers when the assailant struck.

“The loss of life is a profound tragedy for the nation,” a police spokesperson stated. “Our priority remains supporting the grieving families and ensuring those behind this cowardly act are brought to justice.”

Security has been significantly bolstered at religious sites throughout the city as a precautionary measure. Funerals for the victims have been held under tight security, with thousands of mourners in attendance calling for increased protection for places of worship.
