KARACHI: Bioniks and Pakistan State Oil have launched a joint programme to provide AI-enabled prosthetic limbs to underprivileged Pakistanis who have lost arms or legs, expanding a locally developed technology that is already being exported abroad.
The initiative, carried out with PSO’s Corporate Social Responsibility Trust, aims to make advanced robotic prosthetics accessible to deserving individuals, according to details shared at a ceremony at PSO House in Karachi. The event was attended by beneficiaries, including women and children.
Bioniks Chief Executive Officer Anas Niaz said the prosthetic limbs are manufactured in Pakistan using artificial intelligence and are designed to assist users with routine daily tasks. He added that the technology has already gained international traction, with the devices being exported to Jordan and used by beneficiaries in Japan.
More than 100 people, including men, women and children, have so far received prosthetic limbs through the partnership with PSO, Niaz said.
The devices are linked to a cloud-based system that allows for remote monitoring and online troubleshooting, enabling technicians to provide support if users encounter difficulties.
PSO and Bioniks said the programme is intended to help amputees regain mobility, improve their quality of life and reintegrate more fully into society.
