LAHORE:Around 60 sanitation workers were terminated from their jobs by Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) on different pretexts.
The dismissed sanitation workers belonged to Union Council 231 and 247 and were terminated by officials concerned on different pretexts i.e. ghost employees, unwilling employees and absentees.
The terminated sanitary workers alleged that they were punished due to their refusal to give monthly to the Town Manager. Human Rights advocate and Chief of Pakistan Masiha Millat Party Aslam Pervez Sahotra also visited these UCs and expressed solidarity with the terminated workers. He alleged that the town manager dismissed sanitation workers from their jobs for not paying bribes. Sahotra said unfortunately no action was taken against the responsible officer till date nor have these workers been reinstated, whereas it was necessary that the allegations against these sanitation workers were investigated before dismissing them.
Sahotra demanded the chief minister take notice and these sanitation workers be reinstated. He also demanded that the town manager who dismissed poor workers from their jobs should be removed from his post and action should be taken against him as per law. When contacted Deputy CO LWMC Circle 1 M Mubeen, said that the complaints against TM Nishtar Town were under investigation after some of his audio leaks surfaced. He said the area of Nishtar Town was very critical and for the past many months improvement in sanitation conditions was not progressing due to which a newly-recruited manager was posted. He said LWMC vigilance teams also identified workers who were taking salaries but didn’t come to work physically. Mubeen said an inquiry committee was also constituted to probe the issue and after its report action will be taken against the TM Dr Faizan, if found guilty. Later, the LWMC’s spokesperson confirmed that the company has initiated an inquiry into the issue and action will be taken as per its findings.
