ISLAMABAD: Former foreign secretary Sohail Mahmood has been designated to be the secretary general of D-8, also known as Developing-8.
Sohail is currently Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI). He will be assuming the new assignment at the D-8 Headquarters in Istanbul by the end of the month.
Well-placed diplomatic sources told The News on Wednesday that Sohail would be the first Secretary General of D-8 from Pakistan. He will be replacing Nigeria’s Isiaka Abdulqadir Imam.
Interestingly, Sohail had served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkey before assuming as foreign secretary’s role in April 2019.
