LAHORE: Derbyshire have secured the services of experienced Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas for two years, a move hailed as a major boost to their red-ball ambitions.
The 35-year-old has claimed more than 840 first-class wickets at an average of just over 20, including 100 dismissals in Test cricket. Abbas has previously represented Leicestershire, Hampshire, and Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, taking 50 or more wickets in an English season on three occasions.
A skilful and accurate bowler renowned for his consistency, Abbas’ best Test figures came in December 2024, when he dismantled South Africa’s batting lineup at Centurion with 6 for 54. In joining Derbyshire, Abbas reunites with Head of Cricket Mickey Arthur, the coach who handed him his Test debut against West Indies in 2017. Arthur described the signing as a statement of intent: “We’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to sign one of the finest red-ball bowlers around. He’s an exceptional bowler who builds pressure and takes wickets at a remarkable average. His experience will be invaluable for our young players to learn from.”
