LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution seeking a ban on the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan.

The resolution was moved in the House by PMLN lawmaker Tahir Pervaiz who has recently been elected in Faisalabad by-polls. This is noteworthy that in September 2022 while the PTI was in power in Punjab, it passed a resolution in the PA, calling for a treason case against Shehbaz Sharif, the sitting prime minister.

According to the text, Pakistan’s security institutions, which have defended the country on every front and defeated an enemy five times larger than it like India, are the guardians of the nation’s integrity and stability. The resolution states that action should be taken against those who make anti-state statements, spread unrest, or act as tools of a hostile enemy country. It calls for a ban on the PTI founder and his party. It further states that leaders belonging to any political or non-political group should face legal action under the country’s laws and be given exemplary punishment. The text also pays tribute to the young personnel and leadership of institutions working for Pakistan’s security and stability.

The resolution was passed on the Private Members Day. The Punjab Assembly also passed a resolution in support of the 27th Constitutional Amendment moved by PMLN MPA Hina Parvez Butt. The resolution stated that the August House expresses full support for the 27th Constitutional Amendment. “The House believes that this amendment ensures institutional stability and transparency” it added. “The House emphasizes that local government must be given constitutional protection so that no one can derail it.” The resolution also stated that the House terms the decision to establish a Constitutional Court a welcome step. It stated that the amendment will strengthen the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. “The House acknowledges that provincial autonomy and federal balance will be further reinforced,” it added. The resolution also stated that the House considers that the Election Commission is being made more autonomous and effective.

The Punjab Assembly also passed a resolution for the establishment of an independent commission to protect the rights of minorities. The resolution calls on the Punjab government to establish a separate and autonomous body named the Punjab Commission for Minority Rights.

The opposition staged a boycott of the PA session while most of the MPAs were outside the Adiala jail to express support to the PTI founding chairman. On the completion of agenda, the session was adjourned.
