PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday took steps to enhance the capabilities of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) to address security challenges.

The measures were approved during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi. The meeting reviewed key CTD initiatives against terrorism, including institutional reforms, infrastructure expansion, and human resource strengthening.

Officials provided a detailed briefing on the CTD’s current capacity, performance, challenges, and proposed reforms aimed at further bolstering the department.

The chief minister approved an allocation of Rs 7.77 billion for vehicles, weapons, and modern equipment for the CTD. He gave the nod to the establishment of a new CTD Regional Headquarters in Peshawar.

It was decided to revive a previously frozen development project for the construction of CTD offices in 21 districts at a total cost of Rs 4.30 billion. The project aims to expand the CTD’s outreach at the district level and strengthen its operational presence.

The chief minister approved the conversion of 186 CTD detectives into permanent field operators. These operators will handle cyber patrolling, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and field operations, significantly enhancing the department’s operational capacity.

Afridi emphasized that the provincial government is committed to ensuring peace and order and will not allow a lack of resources to hinder this objective.

He directed that the implementation of CTD reforms, infrastructure development, and new recruitments be carried out strictly according to stipulated timelines.
